The Five Royal Palaces in Seoul are Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, Changgyeonggung Palace, Deoksugung Palace, and Gyeonghuigung Palace.
- Gyeongbokgung Palace is the largest and most iconic of the palaces, built in 1395 during the Joseon Dynasty. It served as the main palace and administrative center. The palace complex features beautiful pavilions, gates, and gardens. The most famous structure here is Gyeonghoeru, a pavilion located on an artificial island in a large pond.
- Changdeokgung, constructed in 1405, is notable for its harmonious integration with the natural surroundings. It is known for its "Biwon" (Secret Garden), a beautifully landscaped area with ponds, pavilions, and walking paths.
- Changgyeonggung, originally built in the 15th century, was originally a residence for queens and concubines. It later became a temporary palace and was used as a zoo during the Japanese colonial period. Despite its smaller size, the palace features elegant architecture and serene gardens.
- Deoksugung, built in the mid-15th century, is unique among the five palaces due to its blend of traditional Korean and Western architectural styles. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was the main royal residence, which led to the incorporation of Western elements into the structures.
- Gyeonghuigung was constructed in the late 1600s and served as both a palace and a secondary royal residence. It is known for its elegant stone walls and serene atmosphere. While smaller than the other grand palaces, Gyeonghuigung played an important role during the later Joseon Dynasty.
